In 2019, this project brought together teams from two of thyssenkrupp Group's most innovative divisions. Staff at the thyssenkrupp TechCenter Additive Manufacturing in Mülheim an der Ruhr use cutting-edge manufacturing processes to perfect the industrial production systems of tomorrow, while the thyssenkrupp Elevator test tower in Rottweil develops elevators that are revolutionising urban mobility.

thyssenkrupp Elevator is making cities the best ever places to live. At our most prominent research facility, the test tower in Rottweil, Germany, we are bringing the first ropeless elevator that can drive horizontally as well as vertically to life. Our portfolio includes passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walks, passenger boarding bridges, stair and platform lifts as well as tailored service solutions for all products.

The result of successful teamwork
Of course, when designing a tower whose primary purpose is to test and validate next-generation elevator technologies, there are a lot of technical requirements to consider. Architects Dr Werner Sobek and Helmut Jahn (representing the construction firm Züblin) won the contract to build the tower because their design managed to fulfil these requirements at the same time as combining them with pure, elegant design and a sophisticated structure.
Thanks to the combined efforts of everyone involved in the project the thyssenkrupp Elevator test tower was built in record time. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 3 October 2014 and the keys handed over on 12 December 2016, allowing thyssenkrupp Elevator to get started with its research.

Welcome to Rottweil - City of Towers
Rottweil is an idyllic small town situated on the river Neckar between the Black Forest and the Swabian Alps. It was founded almost 2,000 years ago by the Romans, and its town centre has hardly changed since the 16th century. Visitors from all over Europe flock to Rottweil to admire the extraordinary beauty of the ‘City of Towers’. In addition to a wide range of art galleries and other cultural attractions, it is also home to arguably Germany's most impressive view.
Rottweil is the location for a new, ultra-modern elevator testing tower whose architecture complements the historic towers of the medieval town centre. After a long search, there were a number of reasons why thyssenkrupp Elevator finally chose Rottweil for its testing tower, including the fact that there are about 10,000 engineering students studying at universities and technical colleges in the local area. The site is also close to the Neuhausen Technology Park and the Pliezhausen Research Centre, and benefits from good public transport links.
