thyssenkrupp Towerrun 2018

Test tower hosts first thyssenkrupp Towerrun in 2018

In 2018, the European tower-running scene welcomed a new highlight to its calendar. On Sunday 16 September, the very first thyssenkrupp Towerrun was held in Rottweil, in Germany's Black Forest. And this wasn't just any staircase. Competitors were faced with Europe's highest stair-running venue in the shape of thyssenkrupp's elevator test tower, which was opened in 2017. Athletes in a variety of disciplines tackled almost 1,400 steps and a vertical climb of over 230 metres (670 feet). The initial complement of entries for the inaugural event was snapped up within a few days, and when a further 100 places on the start line were released, they disappeared in five minutes flat. Christian Dillschnitter, Project Director for the Towerrun, was very pleased with the level of interest in the event “We're delighted that the 700 starting places are in such high demand for the first event. We will have competitors from all over Germany and 12 other European countries.” Alongside the ‘civilian’ competitors, a large contingent of fire-fighters were also preparing to take on the challenge. The uniformed rescuers conquered the thyssenkrupp test tower in teams of two, with entrants in the blue-riband category climbing the tower in full breathing apparatus. Police officers from across Germany and representing all branches of the force had similarly high hopes. Indeed, the Rottweil Police Academy registered almost 40 of its officers for the event as part of a training and recruitment drive. The police contingent spanned every level of the force, with everyone from Deputy Commissioners to firearms officers taking on the challenge.
