A location for the future.
thyssenkrupp Elevator's total investment of over 40 million euros serves to underline just how important this region is to the company. Together with the elevator plant in Neuhausen auf den Fildern, which is currently being converted into a fully-fledged technology park, Rottweil and its planned testing tower will grow to become an ultra-modern centre of excellence for elevator technology employing over 1,500 people.
An unmistakable landmark
Despite its imposing height, the tower maintains a graceful and sophisticated look. Architects Helmut Jahn and Werner Sobek clad the concrete shaft with a fabric sheath made from fibreglass cloth. The cloth has a close-mesh structure at the bottom of the tower, but reveals more and more of the building towards the top, reflecting the light at various times of the day and across the seasons in various different ways. This gives the tower a different look and feel depending on the weather conditions and time of day.
A base for tomorrow's challenges.
The 246-metre (807ft) high structure is used to test and certify new elevator technology, leading to significantly shorter development times for future skyscrapers and developments already under construction. With its 12 shafts allowing elevators to travel at up to 18m/s, the tower opens up an unprecedented range of options for meeting the challenges of the future. 3 shafts are dedicated to testing the revolutionary ropeless MULTI elevator.
A symbol of progress.
The tower stands as a monument to the technological age and a symbol of thyssenkrupp Elevator's engineering excellence, but it is also a public symbol of the town of Rottweil – one that complements its historic medieval church spires and fortified towers.
A major regional attraction.
The addition of one of Germany's most striking buildings has provided the area around the research and development tower with a major new attraction. The tower boasts Germany's highest visitor platform, at 232 metres (761ft). Its panoramic views have made it an attractive destination for tourists in Baden-Württemberg.
