A mammoth project at top speed

100 engineers planned one of the most exciting construction projects in Germany, which was built in less than ten months with 3 shifts running at any one time. Among other things, 15,000 cubic metres of concrete, 200 rock nails and 2,640 tonnes of steel were used.

Higher than all the rest.

Germany's highest public visitors' platform at 232 metres is more than 80 metres higher than that of the Stuttgart television tower and offers a spectacular all-round view.

Impressive heavyweight.

40,000 tonnes — that's the weight of the tower. That's as much as a total of 8,000 African elephants.

Great ideas need space.

On the site area totalling 10,000 square metres, there would be space for around 50 tennis courts.

A project goes deep.

30,000 cubic metres of soil was excavated - that equals the weight of approximately 60 million filled bottles of water.

Impressive pace of construction.

With a maximum growth of 5.6 metres per day, the tower managed to grow three times as quickly as a bamboo plant under perfect conditions.

Elevator shafts: the elevator solutions of the future can be tested and certified in a total of 12 different shafts. With top speeds of 64.8 km/h, this takes place under conditions that are unmatched elsewhere. The ropeless multi-car elevator system MULTI is being brought to market maturity here.
Heat management: the heat from all of the components and equipment we have deployed in is collected in a huge heat accumulator in the test tower, from where it is fed back via heat exchangers into the rooms that require heating. This makes us very self-sufficient with regard to heat. Together with highly modern ventilation and air-conditioning technology, we have the best conditions to ensure efficient work.
Energy recovery: in certain load states, the installed traction elevators work in the generatoric mode and can generate power while the elevator is moving. This enables us to reuse approx. 30% of the energy.
Facade: the 17,000-square-metre cladding made of a PTFE-coated glass-fibre fabric is a highly complex material. It is self-cleaning, durable and almost transparent from a distance. It protects the building against intensive solar radiation as well as wind and enables variable light incidence inside the tower. Over and above this, the aerodynamics of the tower are optimised to reduce swaying during storms.
Outdoor viewing platform: the highest public outdoor viewing platform in Germany at 232 metres offers visitors an impressive panoramic view towards the Swabian Alb, the Black Forest and - with ideal conditions - all the way to the Swiss Alps.
Excursion: the natural force of the wind means that the excursion of the tower can be up to 75 cm. A vibration absorber has been built in to reduce the excursion of the tower. This vibration absorber is the first of its type and the only type worldwide that can also be used actively. In tests, we use linear drives to make the tower vibrate. The natural frequency of the tower is approx. 0.2 Hz. This means that with our test tower we have real test conditions to ensure ideal preparation for the technologies of tomorrow.
Slip forming technique: during construction, we rely on the first choice for erecting towers - the slip forming construction is pulled upwards with the working platforms on sliding bars, growing with the tower thanks to a number of hydraulic lifters. During the "sliding", the usual work steps such as pouring concrete, reinforcing and post-treatment of the concrete are never interrupted. This helped us create the tower cladding in a record construction time of 68 days. Record.
